In Mynämäki, nature watching, trails, and local history offer distinct interests for visitors. During the spring migration, you can spot waterfowl and wading birds; elsewhere, hiking trails lead to marked destinations or through changing outdoor art exhibitions. The museums and churches also tell the story of the municipality. This allows you to choose the themes for your stay according to your interests.

Birdwatching and trails at Mietoistenlahti

The extensive Mietoistenlahti area has reed-lined shores and is a nationally significant natural area. Many waterfowl and wading birds can be seen there during the spring migration. Birdwatching facilities include the Vasikkahaan torni and Perhetorni bird towers, as well as the accessible Silakkari platform. The trails and towers along Mietoistenlahden lintupolut offer opportunities for day trips; the area caters to birdwatchers and other visitors.

The approximately half-kilometer-long Kulttuuripolku offers a different perspective. It runs between Saaren kartano, the Mietoistenlahti nature reserve, and a shoreline meadow. Along the path, outdoor exhibitions featuring works by artists who work at Saaren kartano change over time. The exhibition is open to everyone walking in the area. The path combines a short stroll with changing artworks, without requiring visitors to follow a specific exhibition program.

Hiking and cycling

On the Pyhän Henrikin tie hiking trail in Mynämäki, Nunnankukkula, Portassuo, Kirkkokallio, and Munkkeinlevo are marked destinations. If you are interested in places connected with the trail, you can use these names as reference points when planning your visit.

The Asemanseudun luontopolku is six kilometers long in total, with a shorter route of about two kilometers also available. The trail is well marked and signposted. The two distances provide a clear basis for planning your day, without implying a specific walking time.

Cycling routes are also part of the municipality’s day-trip options: they are easy to ride and about six to fourteen kilometers long. The Kuhankuono trail network includes several circular routes, including trails in the Mynämäki area. Activities available there include hiking, cross-country skiing, leisurely walks, and picking mushrooms and berries. There are several ways to get outdoors; the cycling routes mentioned and the Kuhankuono trail network remain separate offerings.

Museums and local history

The Mynämäen museo presents the history of the municipality through exhibitions and collections. Its permanent exhibitions include Pappilan sali, about the vicarage during the time of Pastor Wilho Sipilä, and the Rönberg-Rönnevaara Hall, about the history of Mynämäki’s local Lotta Svärd association.

The Karjalan kotiseutumuseo tells the story of the former municipality of Karjala (Tl.), its residents, and their livelihoods. One section presents the Stone Age settlement site at Aisti; the upper floor hosts changing exhibitions. You can also discover products designed and made in Lauri Junnila’s workshop at a museum exhibition on the upper floor of the Sunila barn. The Laajoen kylämuseo, also known as Vihtorin tupa, is temporarily closed. Its building was once the home of village blacksmith Vihtori Ylen.

Karjalan kirkko is a wooden Neo-Gothic long church designed by architect G.Th. Chiewitz and completed in 1869. Its organ was built by K.G. Wikström and dates from 1894. In summer 2026, Mynämäen kirkko was open as a wayside church daily from June 1 to August 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; outside this period, visits could be arranged with the parish office. For later seasons, please check the current visiting hours.

A guided historical tour explores the surroundings of Pyhän Laurin kirkko. You will also learn what the center of Mynämäki looked like at the beginning of the 20th century. Check availability before your trip. Another distinctive point of interest is the Marekivi: this stone is approximately 1.25 billion years old and is an olivine diabase from Satakunta, eroded by water and humic acids.
