Kaarina: Nature, History and Art
Accommodation in Kaarina
Explore Kaarina through a range of interests: nature trails and sea views sit alongside historical traces, art and a planetarium. If you’re looking for nature experiences on your trip, you’ll find trails through varied landscapes; culture enthusiasts can explore the region’s history, changing exhibitions and outer space.
Nature Trails and Landscapes
Littoistenjärvi lies on the border between Kaarina and Lieto. Winding nature trails circle the lake. Information boards along the Kappelinmäki Nature Trail offer insights into the local natural environment and cultural sites. The St. Catherine’s Trails form a network of hiking routes in Vaarniemi and Ala-Lemu in southwestern Kaarina. The trails pass through rocky hills and steep slopes, groves and coniferous forests, as well as cultural landscapes; along the way, you can enjoy sea views. The rocky area of Vaarniemi is part of the Rauvolanlahti Natura 2000 protected area.
Nature watching is another option to consider: the area includes birdwatching towers overlooking the Järvelä wetlands, known for their diverse birdlife. The different landscape features give you a clear idea of what to expect on the trails, from rocky terrain and steep slopes to forests and cultural landscapes, helping you plan your day.
Historical Traces in Kaarina
Bronze Age burial mounds lie along the St. Catherine’s Trails. The famous Battle of Lemu took place in the area in 1808. The trails combine nature experiences with traces from different eras, so the historical themes are not limited to any one period.
In the village of Ravattula, the remains of Finland’s oldest known church lie on Ristimäki Hill by the Aurajoki River. The King’s Road provides another historical point of reference: it runs from west to east through Kaarina. When Finland was part of the Kingdom of Sweden, the route connected Stockholm via Turku to Vyborg, now in Russia. Preserved sections of the old King’s Road in Kaarina retain their authentic character. Nature trails and environmental conservation areas can also be found along the road.
Art, Island History and Trails
Kuusisto Art Manor is a summer gallery of contemporary art, with curated exhibitions that change each year. Some of the works are displayed in the front garden and orchard and can be viewed there around the clock. These works are installed either for one summer or permanently. A cycling route from the main road to Kuusisto Art Manor follows the old country road and is about 6 kilometres long.
On Kuusisto, the Deadwood Sculpture Trail offers art amid nature all year round. Kuusisto Island is accessible by car or boat. In summer, various media at the visitor centre of the Kuusisto Bishop’s Castle ruins provide information about the castle’s history. The centre also has a café selling local handicrafts and ceramics.
If you’d like to combine art and landscape, you can also explore the Kaarina section of the Archipelago Story Trail. It features 21 information boards with QR codes that visitors can use to open the guide on their own smartphone. The information boards add to the experience along the trail.
Science and Events
Väisälä Space Park includes a planetarium. Shows offer a virtual journey into space or to places on Earth; a guided observatory tour introduces the history of Tuorla Observatory. Activities are tailored to each group and cater to visitors from preschool age to senior age.
Kaarina-talo hosts monthly changing exhibitions for residents and visitors. Several permanently installed works of art are part of its architecture. The building also houses a lunch restaurant and serves as a venue for concerts, lectures and debates. Alongside nature and history, Kaarina also offers ways to engage with art, science and events.
