Pöytyä offers church and local history, as well as nature and recreation destinations within the municipality. The present-day church and its ensemble are rooted in Pöytyä; other destinations can be found in Kyrö and Yläne, among other places.

Church and Historic Ensemble

The present-day church of Pöytyä was built in 1793 under the direction of Mikael Piimänen, based on plans by architect C. C. Gjörwell. A medieval crucifix hangs on the north wall of Pöytyä Church; it probably dates from the first half of the 15th century. Originally, it stood in the triumphal arch of the old church.

The Pöytyä Church Environment ensemble on the Aurajoki includes the medieval church site with the old churchyard, the wooden church from the 1790s, the old parsonage and the former granary. The parish hall designed by Alvar Aalto is also part of the ensemble. The Pöytyä Museum Parsonage displays objects from rural life. Together, these places show different aspects of building and local history, from the medieval church site to later buildings.

Museums and Culture in the Municipality

The Reppuniemi open-air museum comprises 13 buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries that have been relocated there since the 1960s. The buildings include a dwelling house, a smoke sauna, a windmill, a smithy, a smoke cabin, a soldier’s cottage, a sawmill and a threshing barn. Performances by the Pöytyä Amateur Theatre take place on the grounds in summer; during performances, the grounds are reserved for them. Performance dates may vary.

The Taavelin Windmill in Kyrö is the only windmill preserved there. It was built on Taavelinmäki in 1812. Also in the municipality is Vanha-Palikka, Finland’s largest LEGO museum. Visitors can also build with LEGO bricks there. Enkelipuisto offers a different artistic touch: it is home to ITE artist Kyösti Iitti, who has created numerous sculptures from recycled materials there.

Nature and Recreation

From Pöytyä, you can access the Kuhankuono hiking trail network. Its trails pass through the last large forest region of Southwest Finland, over rocky outcrops and raised bogs, as well as through the Vaskijärvi Nature Reserve, the Pukkipalo old-growth forest area and Kurjenrahka National Park. One trail connected to the network runs through Vaskijärvi; along the way, you can experience raised bogs in the Rapakivi zone, rocky forest islands and wilderness lakes.

In the Vaskijärvi Nature Reserve, hiking is permitted only on specially marked trails. The 19-kilometre Vaskijärvi Circuit remains accessible. As local trail conditions can vary, it is advisable to check them before setting out. Established in 1998, Kurjenrahka National Park covers about 2,600 hectares of forest landscape in Southwest Finland. It extends across Aura, Masku, Mynämäki, Nousiainen, Rusko, Pöytyä and Turku.

Another option for exercise is the five-kilometre illuminated fitness trail in the Haukkavuori area. The lights switch off at 9:45 p.m.; operating conditions may vary. The stated distances provide a concrete guide when choosing a route: the Vaskijärvi Circuit is 19 kilometres long, and the Haukkavuori trail is five kilometres.
