The Church of Sauvo, consecrated in 1472, is a prominent historical landmark; the local history museum focuses on local history, and the Tammireitistö network includes cycling, hiking and paddling routes. Together, these offer a range of travel themes: a medieval church, a local museum and outdoor activities on routes in the municipality. If you are considering Sauvo as a place to stay, you can choose what to focus on: architectural history, a museum visit or experiences on the routes.

Churches from Different Eras

The Church of Sauvo is one of Finland’s largest medieval parish churches. It is dedicated to St. Clement of Rome, the patron saint of sailors. As a medieval stone church, it combines a long building history with a remarkable interior heritage: the interior has largely retained its 17th-century appearance and also includes elements from different periods, from the 13th century to the present day.

The Karuna Church, an architecturally distinct landmark, is also located in the municipality of Sauvo. Designed by Josef Stenbäck in the National Romantic style, the grey granite building was constructed between 1908 and 1910. The church is part of a nationally valuable cultural landscape and is protected under the regional plan. The municipality thus offers a chance to see churches from different building periods and in different styles.

Local History Museum and Garden

The Sauvo Local History Museum is located in the centre at Vahtistentie 3. Its main building contains exhibition rooms, a museum shop, toilets and a café kitchen. Each summer, the museum holds an exhibition on a local history theme; the subject may change from year to year. If a particular exhibition is important to your visit, check the theme of that summer’s exhibition in advance.

Kaninkolon kukkapuisto adds a private garden to the selection: it covers one hectare and is open to the public. Visiting arrangements may change, so check them before you travel.

Routes in the Municipality

One specific route in the municipality of Sauvo is Pirunpellonpolku, which is part of the Tammireitistö network. It is signposted, passes a large boulder field and continues to Paratiisimäki, where there is a sweeping view of Maalunlahti.

The Tammireitistö network comprises around 500 kilometres of cycling, hiking and paddling routes through the areas of Kaarina, Paimio, Lieto and Sauvo, as well as connecting routes between the municipalities. This distance refers to the entire network; not all sections are in the centre of Sauvo. Pirunpellonpolku, by contrast, is a specific signposted route with named landscape features. When planning, it is worth distinguishing this individual route from the wider network spanning several municipalities.

If you are looking for a hotel in Sauvo, consider whether you plan to spend more time visiting the museum in the centre or exploring the routes around the municipality.

Getting There and Practical Information

As a rough guide, the drive takes around half an hour from Turku and an hour and a half from Helsinki. Actual travel time may vary depending on the route and conditions; check the current route before setting off.
