Assendrup between Coast, Forest and Village Culture

The coast along Assendrup Skov and farther west to Tirsbæk Strand is predominantly narrow and stony; individual short stretches of sandy beach provide their own distinctive accents in between.

Village character between road and farm complexes

Assendrup is a typical linear village shaped by a winding road, which is now intersected by the main road Juelsmindevej. The village also features the typical village house: a red-brick house with a pronounced base and a gabled roof with a half-hipped roof. Large farm complexes still characterise Assendrup today. At the southern edge, Snogagergård forms the distinctive end of the village of Assendrup. Those interested in rural village landscapes encounter here not only individual buildings, but a scene clearly shaped by roads, farms and village structure.

Fjord landscape and protected hillside forests

Engum and Assendrup are within easy reach of Vejle Fjord, in an area with productive agricultural land, scattered farms and hedgerows – a subtle combination of nature and culture. In the area around Ulbæk Strand, beech forest rises along the hillsides. In places, the forest reaches all the way to the shoreline and offers views across the fjord. The hillside forests provide habitats for many rare and protected animals and plants. In the area around Ulbæk Strand, the hillside forests on the northern side of Vejle Fjord are designated as a Natura 2000 site.

A marked trail near Ulbækhus

A marked 2 km-long footpath from the car park near Ulbækhus leads below the beach to the boat landing stage at Assendrup. The trail runs through the forest above Ulbækhus and over a causeway across Ulbæk. The 2 km-long trail then passes the public beach area at the stream’s mouth into the fjord and returns to the car park. At Ulbækhus, there is therefore a public beach area along a route connecting the forest, stream, fjord shore and boat landing stage. For planning purposes, the route can be clearly divided according to its landscape sections: first forest and causeway, then the shore area, and finally the return to the starting point.

Ulbæk Strand: Boats, fire pits and a waterside experience

In the area around Ulbæk Strand, there is a floating bridge where small dinghies, rowing boats, canoes and kayaks can moor. There is also a water point, two fire pits, tables, benches and an accessible toilet, all of which can be used by everyone. For understanding what a day at the beach entails, it is important to note that the beach area around Ulbæk Strand is not suitable for swimming. The shore is therefore primarily associated with the landscape, mooring and spending time by the water, rather than with a designated swimming experience.
