Hyvinkää offers a range of options for your trip: forest trails and a ski centre sit alongside museums dedicated to railways, local history, art and the textile industry. You can tailor your stay to whether you would rather spend time outdoors or explore the history and culture of the area.

Forest trails and winter sports

Sveitsinpuisto is a 270-hectare wooded area near the centre of Hyvinkää. Two circular trails start at Sveitsin Maja in the nature reserve: Lukkojen kierros is 2 kilometres long, and Harjukierros is 4 kilometres long. Both run along the slopes of ridges and kettle holes. The different trail lengths can help you factor your planned route into your day, but they do not in themselves indicate walking time or difficulty.

West of Hyvinkää lies the Kytäjä-Usmi forest area. It has around 70 kilometres of marked hiking trails and around 27 kilometres of mountain biking trails. There are seven well-maintained campfire sites along the trails in total. In addition to the circular trails in Sveitsinpuisto, this gives you more options for hiking and cycling in the surrounding area. The distances given refer specifically to the Kytäjä-Usmi forest area.

To the north, Sveitsinpuisto borders Sveitsin Hiihtokeskus, located in the Kulomäki area, with its downhill ski slopes. At Sveitsi Snow Plaza, the ski centre offers snowboarding and downhill skiing on slopes of varying difficulty. The centre also includes the Matterhorn slope café, which serves meals and sweet treats. This offers a different focus for planning your trip than the hiking and mountain biking trails: here, winter sports and downhill slopes take centre stage.

Museums: from railways to textile history

The Finnish Railway Museum explores railway heritage and presents the history of Finnish railways in an authentic station and depot area along the Hyvinkää–Hanko railway line. The museum is a National Responsibility Museum. If you arrive by train, R trains stop at Hyvinkää station; the museum is a ten-minute walk from there. There is free parking near its entrance. The museum also offers guided tours for all age groups and holds several events and open days each year, mainly in spring and summer.

Museokeskus Taika in the centre of Hyvinkää brings together the Hyvinkää Art Museum and the Hyvinkää City Museum and their exhibitions. The art museum presents contemporary art as well as art movements and phenomena from the 20th and 21st centuries. The city museum’s exhibitions tell the story of Hyvinkää and its residents. Those interested in art can thus discover the area in a different way from the exhibitions that focus on its local history.

The Valvilla Factory Museum is located in the courtyard of the Hyvinkää Wool Factory and tells stories spanning more than a hundred years. Its exhibits include a 1950s loom made by the Italian manufacturer Nebiolo, on which Finnish military cloth was woven, and a fulling machine dating from 1910. The machine remained in use until October 1981, after which it was transferred to the museum. A Story Map about the history of the factory site and its buildings was published in spring 2024 and can be viewed in a browser or on a mobile phone.
