Raseborg: Ironworks, Art and Nature Trails
Accommodation in Raseborg
The municipality of Raseborg offers places to visit with very different character: Fiskars is known for its ironworks history, art and design, while Billnäs offers industrial history and chocolate. In Ekenäs, architecture, exhibitions and a protected woodland area add to the mix; near Karis, trails wind through cultural and natural landscapes. The places you want to visit are also a useful starting point for choosing where to stay.
Getting to and around Raseborg
Raseborg is accessible by car, bus, train or boat. However, there is no bus or train station named Raseborg. For timetable information and navigation systems, enter a specific place such as Karis, Ekenäs or Fiskars. A regional train runs between Karis and Ekenäs within the municipality. Some bus services run from Karis to Fiskars Village, in some cases via Pojo. Check the timetables for your planned route before deciding how to travel.
Fiskars: Ironworks, Art and Workshops
The Fiskars ironworks was founded in 1649, after Dutch businessman Peter Thorwöste received the privilege to build a blast furnace and a hammer mill on the Fiskars River. Founded in the 17th century, Fiskars Village is now considered a centre of Finnish art and design. Its year-round offerings include workshops, events and shops; there are also restaurants, conference facilities and hotels. You can check seasonal opening details before your visit.
At Hammarbacken, the “Life at Fiskars Ironworks” exhibition presents the lives of ironworkers from the 17th century to the present day. At the foundry, visitors can take part in a metalworking workshop; this activity is seasonal. In Fiskars, alongside the history of the ironworks, hands-on activities also take centre stage.
Industrial History and Chocolate in Billnäs
Billnäs, too, is shaped by its industrial history: the ironworks developed into a centre of modern industry; today, Billnäs is a village. The nature and culture trail runs through the landscape from Pumpviken to Billnäs and is suitable for cycling and walking. This makes it possible to combine a visit focused on industrial history with a trip along the trail, without assuming a specific walking or cycling time.
At the Billnäs Chocolate Factory, you can watch chocolate being made through the windows and sample sweets in the shop. More than 100 different chocolates and pralines are available for purchase there. Chocolate-making courses and demonstrations are also offered. The selection and availability of activities may change; check in advance what will be available during your visit.
Ekenäs: Architecture, Exhibitions and Woodland
In the centre of Ekenäs stands the Ekecenter, a marble-and-brick building designed by Alvar Aalto for the Ekenäs Savings Bank. At Chappe, the exhibitions extend over three floors, all accessible by elevator. You can ask the venue directly about its current visitor arrangements. For those interested in architecture, Ekenäs offers different points of interest: a specific building and exhibitions in a multi-storey venue.
Villa Skeppet at Snäcksundsvägen 8 can be viewed from the outside; a guided tour of the house is available by booking. Visitors are not allowed to enter the grounds. Check the current availability of tours with the operator before visiting. Ramsholmen in Ekenäs is a protected woodland area, offering a different experience from the city’s buildings and exhibitions.
Trails, Birdwatching and Castle Ruins
Near Karis, the cultural and environmental trail at Läppträsket is about 2.3 kilometres long. Several old remains and natural attractions are located along the trail. There are also two birdwatching towers by the lake, where you can watch birds. The trail therefore offers both historical traces and a specific opportunity for birdwatching when planning an outing.
The ruins of Raseborg Castle are in Snappertuna. There are steep stairs and uneven terrain; the castle and the Lovers’ Path are unsuitable for people with disabilities. The castle’s surroundings and trails offer easy access. These differences are important to consider when choosing a visit that includes the ruins or the trail.
