Strömfors Ironworks: Experience the History of the Ironworks
Strömfors Ironworks was founded in 1695 and is one of Finland’s best-preserved ironworks communities. The western branch of the Kymijoki River flows through the site. For about 250 years, the water of the river’s westernmost branch powered the ironworks’ waterwheels and kept the water-powered hammers running. The link between the river and the work once carried out here can also be explored at the Strömfors Ironworks Forge Museum: visitors learn how the historic ironworks operated, how blacksmiths worked and what tools they used to make items such as nails and tools. An authentic water-powered hammer is also on display.
Visitors can explore Strömfors Ironworks independently or on a guided tour. Options include tours on the history of the architecture, dramatized and general tours, as well as an audio guide. The Forge Museum is open in summer; groups are welcome by appointment. In summer, free blacksmith demonstrations are also held at the Upper Forge. Together, the museum and demonstrations offer different perspectives on the work once carried out here.
Church and Seasonal Culture
Ruotsinpyhtää Church offers a distinctive cultural and historical focus of its own. Completed in 1770, the church is designed as an octagonal central church. Its altarpiece, “Ylösnousemus” (“Resurrection”), was painted by Helene Schjerfbeck in 1898. Those interested in church architecture and art will find two specific features to explore here: its unusual central design and the clearly dated work by the Finnish painter.
Live music and summer theatre take place at Strömfors Ironworks during the summer season. In summer, there are also changing exhibitions in the gallery in the attic of the Old Stable. Along with the guided tours and blacksmith demonstrations, these offer different ways to engage with the area’s cultural history, from crafts and architecture to music, theatre and exhibitions. As these activities are seasonal, they are especially worth considering if you plan to visit in summer.
Hiking, Cycling and Water Activities
The Kukuljärvi Hiking Trail is eight kilometres long and starts on the grounds of Strömfors Ironworks. If you would like to include a hike alongside a visit to the historic site, you can take this distance into account when planning your day. Another way to explore the area by bike is the cycling tour through the Kymijoki Valley, which highlights the river valley and Ruotsinpyhtää, including Strömfors Ironworks, as regional highlights.
Eagle Karting offers electric fat bike rentals and provides a route description and a map of popular mountain biking trails in the forests of Ruotsinpyhtää. There is also an indoor go-kart track at Strömfors Ironworks. Wellsters LUONTO VOITTAA AINA offers equipment for independent outings by canoe, kayak or SUP board, as well as for fat biking. The options therefore range from a marked hiking trail to cycling tours and mountain biking trails, as well as water activities. Alongside the cultural attractions, you can decide which of these options you would like to make a focus of your trip.
