Historic Old Town and art
Elbing’s Old Town has a historic street layout, an outer bailey, and a monastery and hospital complex. Its character is also shaped by reconstructed townhouses and the distinctive Ścieżka Kościelna. Other sights include St. Nicholas Cathedral, the Galeria EL Art Center and the Market Gate. These places offer a range of cultural points of interest in the Old Town; if you are particularly interested in architecture and history, you can take them into account when planning your trip.
The observation platform on the tower of St. Nicholas Cathedral is open to visitors from May 1 to September 30, 2026. This clearly defined period is relevant when choosing your dates if you plan to visit the platform. The building that houses the Galeria EL Art Center offers a different perspective on the city’s history: it is a former two-aisled Gothic Dominican church. Today, the art center primarily presents and creates contemporary art. Its program includes exhibitions, concerts, performances, theater productions and film screenings.
Art around the city and the history of Truso
You can encounter art in Elbing beyond the art center. “Otwarta Galeria” is a collection of more than sixty spatial artworks around the city. Several dozen works from the first and second Biennale Form Przestrzennych are also spread throughout the city. Both are reminders of artworks in different parts of the city, without needing to be grouped into a single exhibition or a shared itinerary.
The Archaeological and Historical Museum’s exhibition “Truso – legenda Bałtyku” is dedicated to Truso, a trading settlement from the Viking Age. It was founded on the shore of Lake Truso. Visitors interested in early settlements and trade will find a historical focus here that differs from the Old Town’s architecture and art offerings.
Forest trails and other travel experiences
Bażantarnia is a forest park and an important recreational area in Elbing. Its trails are suitable for hiking, horse riding and cycling; in winter, the forest trails are also an option for cross-country skiing. This gives you a choice of activities when planning your visit, without any one activity defining the character of the area.
The blue circular trail runs through the forest park as a hiking route. In its section through Bażantarnia, the red Copernicus Trail follows the Srebrny Potok, passes the Elewów Bridge and Parasol, and continues over Góra Jagiellońska to the parking area near the forester’s lodge in Dąbrowa. These details help distinguish the two hiking options described: the blue route is identified as a circular trail, while the description of the red route section lists a series of landmarks. A trip on the Elbląg Canal can also begin in Elbing’s Old Town.
