The Church and Ecclesiastical History
The present-day Church of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built between 1875 and 1877 under Pastor Wilhelm Gottfried Grzybowski. Grzybowski also supplied the church with most of its furnishings, which he made himself. His contribution thus connects the building’s history with the furnishings of the church interior. The church is included in the register and inventory of historic monuments.
The later history of the parish is also connected to the church: an independent parish was established there in 1947. The rectory also houses the sculpture “Head of Christ with a Crown of Thorns” by Wilhelm Gottfried Grzybowski, dating from 1853. It was created before the present-day church was built. The construction period, parish history and sculpture thus highlight different points in time. Other Traces of the Village
Another historical point of interest is the protected Evangelical cemetery, dating from the first half of the 19th century. The history of religious life in Rychliki goes back further still: sermons were preached here in Polish in the 17th century. These two facts refer to different periods and topics; they complement the history of the church and parish with the cemetery and the language used in sermons at the time.
Rychliki was founded on 1 January 1310 in a wooded area. Part of this forest has survived in the surrounding area. The forest is therefore part of both the village’s founding history and its present-day surroundings. It describes the wooded origins and the surviving nearby section of forest without treating the village centre and its surroundings as one and the same.
Butter and Economic History
The local dairy cooperative, founded in 1890, is part of the area’s economic history. After its founding, butter from Rychliki became known for its quality and was delivered to Berlin and Szczecin twice a week. These named destinations give a specific sense of the product’s historical reach beyond Rychliki. Alongside the church, cemetery and forest history, butter production offers another perspective on the village: a local product whose reputation and deliveries played a part in its recorded history.
