Elbing: Old Town, Forest Park and Waterways

Old Town and history

The historic street plan, a reconstructed row of houses and the Kościelna Path, characteristic of Elbing, show different sides of the Old Town. The street plan highlights the historic layout; the row of houses draws attention to reconstructed buildings, while the named path provides another point of reference in the cityscape. Gothic sights in the Old Town include St. Nicholas Cathedral, the Galeria EL Art Centre and the Market Gate.

Another cultural and historical facet is the collection of archaeological finds at the Archaeological and Historical Museum. It comes from 30 years of excavations in the Old Town and is considered the richest of its kind in Poland. Bażantarnia: Forest trails and seasons

Bażantarnia is a 369-hectare forest park on the edge of the Elbląg Upland, located in Elbing. Its marked trails invite you to hike, and the park is also suitable for horse riding and cycling. In winter, the forest trails are suitable for cross-country skiing. This seasonal distinction can help with planning: cross-country skiing is specifically a winter activity, while hiking, horse riding and cycling are also listed as options.

One specific hiking destination is Diabelski Kamień in the Srebrny Potok valley. The trail leads to the stone, which lies in the stream bed. According to local legend, the devil dropped it. Here, a named landscape, a stream and a traditional tale come together—a different focus from the marked trails that generally invite visitors to hike. So, when exploring the area’s natural attractions, you can either keep the different activities in mind or focus on a particular place and its legend.

Waterways and longer routes

A trip on the Elbląg Canal can begin in the Old Town. The canal is 129.8 kilometres long in total; the Ostróda–Elbląg section is 80.4 kilometres long. The wider travel area of Powiat Elbląski also includes the five ship lifts at Buczyniec, Kąty, Oleśnica, Jelenie and Całuny. They are among the area’s tourist attractions; the lifts carry boats two kilometres over dry land.

The blue St. Adalbert’s Way offers a different way to experience the area. It begins at Elbląg Zdrój railway station, is 42 kilometres long and connects Elbing with the place where St. Adalbert died, in Święty Gaj. This makes it possible to compare a trip on the canal as a waterway with a clearly defined, long-distance route: the canal details include its total length and one section, while the St. Adalbert’s Way has a starting point, a destination and a stated length. A waterway also runs through Powiat Elbląski along the Elbląg River and across the Vistula Lagoon.

Culture in Powiat Elbląski

Mennonite settlement heritage also shapes the cultural background of the wider travel area of Powiat Elbląski. Its many traces include arcaded houses, Dutch farmsteads, churches and other religious buildings, as well as former Mennonite cemeteries. Mennonites, members of an Anabaptist religious movement, came from the Netherlands to Żuławy at the beginning of the 16th century.
