Polom: River, Forest and Manor Estate History

Polom combines river and forest landscapes with several historic building complexes. The Łaźna Struga flows through the village, which is almost surrounded by forest on three sides. Polom offers different reasons to visit: a kayaking stretch, small lakes with floating mats of vegetation, and ensembles dating from around the turn of the 20th century.

River, Forest and Lakes

Polom is a stop on a kayaking trip along the Łaźna Struga, which flows through the village. Before the second bridge, the Połomska Młynówka flows into the Łaźna Struga. Small lakes near Polom are increasingly being overgrown by forest and marsh vegetation. This creates floating mats of vegetation. The vegetation visibly changes the character of these bodies of water. The area is considered a good place to forage for wild berries and mushrooms in summer and autumn. This connection with nature is therefore tied to a particular season.

Forest Route and Orientation

A stone-paved road connects Polom with Wronki and runs almost entirely through the forest. The two routes are clearly distinct: the kayaking trip follows the Łaźna Struga, while the road connects Polom with Wronki. This is a practical distinction for orientation between a water route and a forest road.

Historic Buildings and Ensembles

The manor-park ensemble in Polom includes two brick stables, a brick granary, a wooden barn and the remains of the park. The buildings date from the late 19th or early 20th century. The stables and granary are built of brick, while the barn is wooden; remnants of the park also survive. The different materials and the park remains show that the ensemble comprises more than one type of building.

Next to the former manor buildings is a 19th-century Evangelical cemetery; another Evangelical cemetery from the same period is also located in Polom. There is also a brick former inn dating from the transition between the 19th and 20th centuries at house No. 2. It is privately owned.

The Wiczno forester's lodge ensemble was built at the beginning of the 20th century. It comprises a forester's lodge and two brick utility buildings, and is state-owned. The former state-farm buildings in Polom are separate from this ensemble: they are currently used by a private tenant. Stone construction and tiled roofs are characteristic of buildings in the area. The state-owned forester's lodge group can therefore be distinguished by its use from the utility buildings currently used privately.

The dates place several of these complexes around 1900: the manor-park ensemble dates from the late 19th or early 20th century, the former inn from the transition between the two centuries, and Wiczno from the beginning of the 20th century. These refer to different building complexes, not to a single shared construction date.
