Okartowo lies between Lake Śniardwy and Lake Tyrkło, and is also located on the WJM route. This connects the town’s location between two lakes with its place in the regional network of the Masurian waterways.

Medieval History

Okartowo has documented medieval heritage connected with the Teutonic Order. According to a traditional account, a wooden watchtower was erected here around 1340 and was later replaced by a brick castle.

The history of the town also includes an event from 1361: The garrison of the Teutonic castle captured the Lithuanian prince Kiejstut and his son. Kiejstut later escaped and attacked the castle twice.

Location on the Roads

Okartowo lies on National Road 16, on the route between Mikołajki and Orzysz. Route 1849N is designated as a district-road connection from DK16 in Okartowo via Nowe Guty to DK63.
