Kirke Helsinge between a Church Village and Cultural Heritage

Kirke Helsinge is an agriculturally oriented church village that has gradually developed a strong character as a railway town, despite having no railway station. Here, the village character is combined with church architecture, cultural heritage and a rural landscape.

Church and Cultural Heritage

Kirke Helsinge Church was extensively rebuilt as a three-aisled hall church in the first part of the 16th century and has retained this form to the present day. In 1647, it was referred to as Sct. Hans Church. The rebuilding and the later designation belong to different points in the history of the church building.

The old settlement around Kirke Helsinge Church and the vicarage is a key element of the valuable cultural heritage area. The designation concerns parts of Kirke Helsinge and connects the church building with its old settlement surroundings. The 300-metre protection zone around the church extends into the old settlement area with the vicarage.

Burial Mounds in the Rural Landscape

Fledhøj is a well-preserved, flat-topped burial mound measuring approximately 6 × 35 metres. Its flat-topped form contrasts with the beautifully rounded shape of Lindehøj. Fledhøj and Lindehøj have the same width but differ in length: Fledhøj measures approximately 35 metres, while Lindehøj measures 30 metres.

Lindehøj is a well-preserved, beautifully rounded burial mound measuring 6 × 30 metres, with a tree at its summit. It is situated at an elevated location. A field track leading to a farm is approximately 30 metres away, while a country road is 325 metres away. At Lindehøj, the field track to the farm, at approximately 30 metres, is clearly closer than the country road 325 metres away. Alongside its rounded shape, the elevated location and the tree at the summit are therefore also part of Lindehøj’s specific appearance.

Historic Roads and a New Cycle Connection

The old, gently winding country-road route through Kirke Helsinge is defined by Søndergade and Helsingevej. The two street names reflect the church village’s historic connection to transportation. The gently winding route forms a distinct part of the settlement’s history alongside the church and burial mounds.

A new cycle path has been established between Kirke Helsinge and Mullerup. When planning a day trip, the cycle path to Mullerup can be considered alongside the historic road route.
