Ronneby
Ronneby is located at the mouth of the Ronnebyån River on the Baltic Sea in the Swedish province of Blekinge, known as the “Garden of Sweden,” halfway between the towns of Karlshamn and Karlskrona. Shortly after the town was founded in the 13th century, when it was still under Danish rule, Ronneby was the largest town in Blekinge and a center of trade with the Hanseatic League. It was only under Swedish rule, beginning in 1658, that Ronneby lost importance to the newly established town of Karlskrona right next door, where Sweden’s largest naval port was built at the end of the 17th century. The discovery of mineral springs in the 18th century marked the beginning of Ronneby’s development into one of Sweden’s most important spa towns.
The oldest surviving building is the Church of the Holy Cross, dating from the 12th century. To the south of the town, Brunnspark spa park—with its waterfall, lakes, woodland, many rhododendrons, swimming lake, scented garden and Japanese garden—is an inviting place to stroll and relax. A range of events, concerts and exhibitions adds to the park’s attractions.
Ronneby’s many attractions draw day-trippers and holidaymakers alike. Numerous bathing spots among the islands off Ronneby offer opportunities to unwind and relax. Ronneby Brunnsbad is open year-round, with indoor and outdoor pools in a imaginatively designed aquatic setting. Whether by canoe or bicycle, on horseback or on foot, the area around Ronneby itself is an experience for nature lovers. Recreational boaters have plenty of options for mooring at one of the many berths and harbors. In winter, the signposted trails are used for cross-country skiing.
Ronneby’s cultural center is a versatile venue. Built as a warehouse in 1907, it is now one of southern Sweden’s largest art galleries. The Risanäs School Museum displays a schoolhouse from 1854 in its original condition.
With its location on the Baltic Sea, natural surroundings, many accommodation options—including holiday homes and hotels—and convenient access from the E22 coastal highway, Ronneby is an ideal destination for a relaxing holiday on Sweden’s Baltic coast.
