Dueodde
Unique nature at Dueodde
Dueodde is the name given to the southern (south-eastern) tip of the Danish Baltic Sea island of Bornholm . It is not a settlement in the true sense, but rather a collection of large holiday complexes and tourist facilities. The dune landscape around Dueodde, consisting of shifting dunes, is very reminiscent of the dunes along the German and Polish Baltic Sea coasts, and therefore contrasts sharply with most of Bornholm. One reason for this is that, unlike the north of the island, southern Bornholm is not made up of rock formations, but is geologically much younger. For these reasons, one of the most beautiful sandy beaches in the entire Baltic Sea stretches across Dueodde: more than 10 kilometres long and up to 300 metres wide. The dune sand here is particularly fine-grained and light in colour, and was even used in hourglasses. The area has been protected since 1936. Just how active the coastal dynamics remain here is shown by the fact that, after a major storm surge, almost the entire beach at Dueodde disappeared, but gradually returned to its former splendour all by itself. The 47-metre-high lighthouse stands in the dunes of Dueodde. It offers a unique view of the southern part of Bornholm. The holiday complexes blend well into the coastal forest with its sandy soil. The gently sloping beach and shallow water provide excellent swimming opportunities, especially for young children, making it particularly suitable for family holidays. The sandy beach, with partly wooded hinterland, stretches west from Dueodde via Sømarken to Boderne, where the harbour for the town of Aakirkeby on Bornholm was once located.

Holiday destination Dueodde
The large holiday-home region that dominates the entire south-eastern corner of the Baltic Sea island of Bornholm begins immediately south of Nexø at Balka and Snogebæk. Every year, thousands of visitors find plenty of room in this unique dune landscape to enjoy a relaxing seaside holiday in summer. There are also many opportunities for excursions throughout the year. The nearest “proper” town is Snogebæk. It lies amid the almost continuous holiday settlements between Balka and Bornholm’s southern tip at Dueodde. Snogebæk is all about holidays, with a wealth of small restaurants and boutiques that cater entirely to the needs of visitors to Bornholm. A large fish smokehouse serves guests the “silver” of the sea in the form especially typical of Bornholm. Craftspeople, glass and textile designers, and two confectionery makers known beyond the region—Kjærstrup Chokolade and Boisen Is—offer handmade treats and ice cream made from entirely organic ingredients. Snogebæk is also known for its major events. From mid-May to mid-September, Bornholm’s largest flea market is held here every Saturday morning. The only exceptions are the weekends of the annual rock open-air festival and harbour festival. Dueodde and its surroundings are among the most popular and extensive holiday areas along the entire Baltic Sea coast.
