Hasle

Hasle is a small coastal town on the island of Bornholm. It lies north of Rønne in a uniquely beautiful landscape. The town grew out of a small fishing village first documented in the 15th century, although the earliest traces of settlement date back to the 12th century. Fishing shaped Hasle’s character for a long time, until industry took over in the 19th century, with a clinker and firebrick works, a glassworks and a coal mine. The only remnant in Hasle from the heyday of herring fishing on Bornholm is its smokehouse.

Holiday destination Hasle

At the heart of Hasle stands its church, built around 1400. Visitors can still admire its well-preserved medieval interior. The church’s main attraction is a gilded winged altarpiece dating from around 1500. It has other remarkable features, too, which visitors can discover for themselves. Near the church, a memorial commemorates the famous Danish opera singer Vilhelm Herold; his birthplace has been converted into a memorial site.
Hasle Harbour only took on its present form in 1988. It was intended to become a major base for herring fishing, but catches were already declining sharply at the time. The harbour’s original purpose was therefore put to a different use. Although oversized for its original role, it has become a home port and a popular port of call not only for fishing boats, but especially for recreational craft. Excursion boats also depart from Hasle Harbour to explore the surrounding area. A popular place to visit is Hasle’s museum smokehouse, where visitors can sample the smoked fish. At another smokehouse, fish are smoked in a thoroughly traditional, local style.
Grønbechs Gård, a centre for arts and crafts, offers around 1,500 square metres of exhibition space. Hasle Tourist Information is housed in a former wheelwright’s workshop right in the centre of this holiday town. Hasle is also a popular destination for visitors staying in the small towns and villages along western Bornholm, who come to shop or enjoy a little retail therapy. There are, of course, plenty of places to stay in Hasle itself. A hotel and a campsite, and above all holiday homes and apartments, invite you to enjoy an unforgettable holiday in Hasle on the Baltic Sea island of Bornholm.
