Helligpeder-Teglkås-Vang

The Baltic Sea island of Bornholm is undoubtedly one of the most appealing and varied landscapes in the entire Baltic region. And even on Bornholm itself, it is difficult to rank its most beautiful spots. Without a doubt, the northwest coast of Bornholm, between the town of Hasle and the small fishing harbour of Vang, belongs right at the top of the list. Anyone heading north along the coast from Hasle can experience some of the island’s most beautiful scenery within just a few kilometres. From inviting sandy beaches perfect for swimming and primeval woodland to the particularly adventurous cliffs of the rocky coastline, this area brings together almost the full range of landscape types found along the Baltic coast. From Hasle, the route passes through the three picturesque villages of Helligpeder, Teglkås and Vang, heading towards the northern tip of Bornholm. Small fishing harbours such as those in Helligpeder and Teglkås bear witness to the industry that once dominated the local economy. And the smokehouse in Teglkås is one of Bornholm’s most popular photographic subjects.

Wild cliffs on Bornholm

A few hundred metres north of Teglkås, Jons Kapel rises above the shore as a bizarre pillar of rock. Legend has it that the monk Jon once tried to convert Bornholm’s pagan inhabitants to Christianity from this spot. A steep staircase of 172 steps leads down to the shore here—a unique experience no hiker should miss. This stretch of coast is also home to part of the island-wide rescue route network once used to bring shipwreck survivors ashore and save them along this otherwise inaccessible coastline. Even where there are sometimes only 20 metres between the shore and the cliffs, there is, remarkably, still room for a house. Passing disused quarries, often filled with water, the route leads through the Ringebakkerne Nature Reserve and finally to the village of Vang. Just before reaching it, at Ringdal, you can visit Bornholm’s only watermill, which has been expertly restored.

Bornholm’s maritime west coast

The harbour at Vang on Bornholm is especially popular with recreational boaters. Visitors never tire of admiring the village’s idyllic setting, built on terraces. An unusual monument made from old, unused stones commemorates the quarries that once operated here on Bornholm. The harbour has been expanded several times. Originally used to ship stone from nearby quarries, it is now one of Bornholm’s most attractive leisure harbours—and one of the finest along the entire Baltic coast. The watermill at Vang is one of three that have survived on Bornholm. The coast of Bornholm between Hasle and Vang offers a truly special experience, with a diversity rarely found elsewhere along the Baltic coast.
