Sandkås-Tejn

The northeast coast of Bornholm is characterised by a series of holiday resorts which, together with their varied hinterland, are becoming an increasingly popular destination for Baltic Sea holidays on the island. Travelling southeast from the northern tip, just south of Allinge you pass the former fishing villages of Sandkås and Tejn, which have developed into the kind of twin resorts typical of Baltic Sea holiday destinations. The original fishing village of Tejn was the starting point for the development of Sandkås, the holiday resort to its north; today, the two places form a single community.

The harbour town of Tejn

In its original form, Tejn harbour dates back to the beginnings of the settlement as a fishing village on the coast of Bornholm. It has been expanded several times and, during the heyday of Baltic Sea fishing a few decades ago, was developed into a large fishing harbour. It is so sizeable that, after the harbours of Rønne and Nexø , it is the third-largest of its kind on Bornholm. Today, around two dozen fishing boats still have their home port in Tejn and are a popular attraction for curious tourists, who can get a close-up look at the fishermen’s everyday lives. After all, a harbour is always a magnet for visitors on holiday along the Baltic coast. Few people can resist its maritime atmosphere or the fishermen’s rather reserved, self-assured manner, which can take some getting used to. Since 2005, Tejn harbour has gained new renown. Every April, it is the starting point for “Trolling Bornholm”, Scandinavia’s largest multi-day trolling competition, with up to 300 boats taking part. The winner is the angler who catches the biggest salmon. The record, set by a Danish angler in 2007 with a catch weighing 22.2 kg, has yet to be broken.

The holiday resort of Sandkås

Sandkås, with its many hotels and guesthouses, is a tourist-oriented resort with a sandy beach that is relatively long for this stretch of Bornholm’s coast and sheltered by rocky cliffs. It is a unique combination of a narrow bathing beach and small rocks “dotted” along it, dividing the beach into separate sections. At the same time, it offers a preview of the rocky coastline typical of this part of Bornholm, which becomes even more impressive farther south. It is no coincidence that Sandkås means “sand cove” in Danish. Both the Little and the Great Sand Cove invite visitors to swim. A scenic coastal walking trail begins in Sandkås and runs all the way to Allinge, offering numerous impressive views of the coast of the Baltic island of Bornholm. Since tourism is the main livelihood of the residents of both Sandkås and Tejn, each village offers a wide range of holiday accommodation, mostly holiday homes and apartments, for a relaxing and varied family holiday on the Baltic island of Bornholm.
