Ängelholm
In the north of the Swedish province of Skåne lies the town of Ängelholm. It is the eastern endpoint of the Baltic Sea bay of Skälderviken, with its long sandy beaches. This paradise for a seaside holiday on the Baltic is therefore also known as the “Swedish Riviera.” No fewer than eight bathing spots line the coast of Skälderviken Bay. The town of Ängelholm was founded in 1516 during the Danish era by King Christian II. Its origins lie in the settlement of Luntertun, whose remains can still be visited today. The sand dunes and beach are now a blessing for bathers, but in the past they were a curse for the town. To protect itself from shifting dunes, Ängelholm planted a coastal forest, now a popular area for hiking. But the coastal hinterland around Ängelholm is also ideal for an active holiday on Sweden’s Baltic coast. The Rönneå River, which flows into the Baltic Sea at Ängelholm, winds through open coastal woodland and is an interesting destination, especially for canoeists. The Prästängen nature reserve (Pasture Meadow) is a natural monument featuring stands of ancient oaks. The shallow southern coast of Skälderviken, with its European bird sanctuary, is a major draw for nature lovers.
The town of Ängelholm itself has numerous ceramics galleries, harking back to the time when Ängelholm was also a centre of ceramic production. Traditionally, “lergöken”—the ceramic cuckoo whistle shaped like a child’s flute—was made here. Ängelholm railway station is also home to one of the two sites of the Swedish Railway Museum (the other is in Gävle), which features a large model railway. Sweden’s oldest prison now houses the Handicrafts Museum. The many excursion ideas in and around Ängelholm attract holidaymakers staying in holiday homes in the town and surrounding area. These include several castles from the Danish era (which ended in 1658), some of which are privately owned. The area around Ängelholm offers plenty of opportunities for an active holiday, especially for golfers and cycling enthusiasts. Ängelholm is particularly well situated on the main transport routes. The West Coast motorway, the E6, passes through the area, as does the West Coast railway between Malmö and Gothenburg. The airport near the town centre has connections to Stockholm’s Arlanda and Bromma airports.
