Kungsbacka
Just 20 kilometres south of Gothenburg, Kungsbacka lies on Sweden’s west coast. The surrounding area is in the southern part of the West Swedish archipelago and brings together, within a small area, many of the landscape types found in Sweden. Kungsbacka is the northernmost municipality in Halland County, with a varied hinterland. The town was completely rebuilt after a fire in the second half of the 19th century and is characterised by the architectural style of that period.
Southwest of Kungsbacka, the Onsala peninsula extends into the Kattegat, the northernmost part of the Baltic Sea. Several nature reserves testify to the area’s appeal. The small fishing harbour of Gottskär is a popular excursion destination and also has a bathing beach, a marina and a dive centre. A one-hour boat trip takes you to the small island of Nidingen, home to the world’s oldest twin lighthouse. On the peninsula’s northwest side, the marinas at Lerkil, Kullavik and Vallda-Sandö also invite recreational boaters to stop off.
West of Kungsbacka, unique natural attractions await visitors. Fjärås Bräcka is a distinctive moraine ridge, preserved in its original form and with clearly defined edges, surrounded by prehistoric burial grounds.
The village of Äskhult is a farmstead dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, uniquely preserved in Sweden and unchanged since the beginning of the 19th century. The four wooden houses, preserved in their original locations, have never been painted, and the fields and pastures are laid out just as they were when they were farmed by the villagers of old.
Tjolöholm Castle, situated on a peninsula right on the coast, transports visitors to a completely different world. Built around 1900, the castle is designed in the English Tudor style. A carriage museum and vintage car exhibition, as well as equestrian competitions, a Christmas market and a Midsummer celebration, attract many visitors to the newly renovated castle and its extensive grounds, which also include a bathing beach.
Kungsbacka, south of Gothenburg, offers numerous places to visit and a wide range of accommodation, from hotels, campsites and youth hostels to holiday homes.
