Jurmala

Today, the city of Jurmala is considered the seaside resort of the Latvian capital Riga, but it also has a history of its own. Jurmala stretches northwest of Riga along the mouth of the Lielupe River, which runs parallel to the Baltic Sea, at the southern end of the Gulf of Riga. Several adjoining districts extend over a total length of 40 kilometers. At 30 kilometers long, the continuous beach is one of the longest of its kind on the Baltic Sea.

Location and history

The city was founded at the end of the 18th century and became a popular excursion destination for the people of Riga around 1900. In 1920, during Latvia’s first period of independence, the districts were combined to form the city of Rigas Jurmalas (Riga Beach); in 1959, it became the independent city of Jurmala. Today, Jurmala is not only a popular getaway for Riga’s residents, but also one of the most popular and best-developed Baltic seaside resorts in Latvia.

Sights

The many wooden houses are emblematic of Jurmala. They were deliberately designed to suit the city’s character as a nature-oriented spa resort and were mostly built in the 19th century. Their distinctive features include roof and facade carvings drawing on a variety of architectural styles. Of the city’s more than 4,000 historic buildings, over 400 are listed as monuments. Eight different walking routes are marked out in Jurmala, each reflecting the distinctive character and atmosphere of its respective area.
