Northern Latvia: Salacgriva – Saulkrasti – Gauja National Park

The eastern shore of the Gulf of Riga features both coastal towns with a long history, such as Salacgriva and Saulkrasti, and long stretches of untouched coastline. The hinterland is an especially attractive destination for excursions, thanks in particular to Gauja National Park.

Location and history

Turaida CastleNorthern Latvia, with the Vidzeme region, is part of the historic region of Livonia. Today, in its narrowest sense, the name Livonia refers to this region, although it once included the surrounding areas as well. Since the settlement of the Livonian tribe, the region has changed hands many times, passing to the Poles, Danes, German knights, Swedes and, from 1721, the Russians.

Nature

The varied coastline, rich cultural and historical heritage, and picturesque lakes and rivers enchant visitors, allowing them to feel the breath of history in medieval castles, manor houses and their romantic parklands.

Seaside resorts

From Ainazi in the north, the chain of seaside resorts runs south through Salacgriva to Saulkrasti. Ainazi, on the Estonian border, lives by its traditions as a port town and is dominated by its distinctive lighthouse. Salacgriva, just a few kilometres to the south, is also the gateway to the North Kurzeme Biosphere Reserve. Saulkrasti lies on the route to Riga and is also the starting point for the famous

Gauja National Park

Gutmanis CaveThis national park stretches along the middle reaches of the Gauja River, a tributary of the Daugava, and is hard to match for its diversity. Where else in Europe can you find sandstone cliffs in a river valley? Gorges, forests and wetlands are protected here as part of the EU’s Natura 2000 network. The Gutmanis Cave near Sigulda, nearly 20 metres long and 34 metres high, has been a place of pilgrimage for centuries. The Ligatne nature trail is home to many wild animals and is also the site of a large Soviet-era nuclear bunker. Whether it is the Araisi Lake Fortress or Turaida Castle, a glimpse into the past is always worthwhile. The town of Sigulda offers two innovative attractions. At Aerodium, a huge vertical wind tunnel, visitors can “simulate” flying, while the bobsleigh and luge track, used for international competitions, is also open to everyone for rides with an instructor.
