Hals Hou
Hals is a small town on the Danish coast of the Kattegat, part of the Baltic Sea. The eastern end of the Limfjord is located here in Hals; the fjord divides the Danish peninsula of Jutland and forms the island of Vendsyssel to the north. From the town’s early history, Hals Fortress has been preserved with its four bastions and surrounding moats. Today, it houses the Hals Museum and is Denmark’s best-preserved fortification. Today, tourism is the mainstay of Hals’s economy, thanks to the area’s natural attractions. With the mouth of the Limfjord, Hals lies at the centre of a continuous stretch of beach several kilometres long on the Kattegat, part of the Baltic Sea. The beach extends south to Mariager Fjord and north to Sæby and Frederikshavn . A landmark of Hals is an authentic whale jawbone, taken from a blue whale killed in the Barents Sea, which has been erected like a gateway in the town. Hals’s newest landmark is a 12-metre-tall work of art—a ring created by a local artist. The Hals Barre Lighthouse, about 10 kilometres from the town, is another reminder of its seaside location.
About ten kilometres north of Hals is the small seaside resort of Hou. The beach between the two towns, Bisnap Strand, is considered the finest sandy beach in all of Denmark. It even stands out among the beautiful beaches of North Jutland, which are among Denmark’s most popular. This is also why the extensive sandy beaches of North Jutland’s “mild coast” are lined with so many holiday homes and campsites, offering affordable accommodation to meet the strong demand for family holidays and active breaks on Denmark’s Baltic coast. In addition, the beach and hinterland between Hals and Hou offer especially good opportunities for active holidays, including golf, water sports, bowling, horse riding, mini golf and tennis.
The Kattegat coast of the Baltic Sea in North Jutland, between Hals and Hou, offers excellent opportunities for a relaxing and active family holiday on the Danish Baltic coast, whether in a holiday home or at a campsite.
