Sæby
The port town of Sæby lies in the northwest of the Danish peninsula of Jutland. Sæby is a holiday destination on the Kattegat, part of the Baltic Sea, just a few kilometres south of the ferry port of Frederikshavn, within sight of the island of Læsø some 20 kilometres away in the Kattegat. Thanks to its wide, family- and child-friendly sandy beach on the Baltic Sea, Sæby is one of Denmark’s most popular holiday destinations. Sæby became a favourite retreat for Danish artists.
The countryside around Sæby invites families to enjoy a relaxing and varied active holiday. The wide sandy beaches on the Kattegat, part of the Baltic Sea, north and south of Sæby are renowned; all are well equipped and easily accessible. Sæby’s own North Beach is accessible to people with disabilities, while Lyngså Beach south of Sæby is also particularly accessible and has shallow water. Blue flags fly at all the beaches around Sæby. A few kilometres south of Lyngså, near Voerså, there is a bird sanctuary. The wooded, hilly countryside inland from the coast between Sæby and Lyngså makes an ideal area for hiking.
Since 2001, Sæby’s landmark has been the sculpture “The Woman from the Sea”. The six-metre-high, two-faced figure refers to the play of the same name by Norwegian national poet Henrik Ibsen, which he wrote after a stay in Sæby. The figure stands in the harbour, directly in line with St Mary’s Church, which dates back to Sæby’s most significant period. It is part of the former Carmelite monastery.
Sæby is the picture of a cosy Danish provincial town, with old buildings and narrow streets that are especially inviting for a leisurely stroll on holiday. A holiday on the Kattegat, part of the Baltic Sea in northern Denmark, is made a memorable experience by the highly developed infrastructure amid an otherwise unspoilt setting. Active pursuits such as tennis, golf, canoeing and cycling are made possible by the many affordable yet comfortable holiday homes, campsites and hotels in and around the holiday centre of Sæby.
