Piteå

Piteå lies on Sweden’s Baltic coast, on the Gulf of Bothnia, southwest of Luleå in Norrbotten County. Here, the Pite River flows into the Baltic Sea, with its deeply indented coastline and numerous offshore islands. Founded in the early 17th century, the town turned adversity into opportunity in 1666: after a devastating fire, it was moved closer to the coast, which is still rising here.
Piteå is one of the best-known towns in Norrland and the most important tourist destination in all of northern Sweden. Its well-developed tourist infrastructure, with numerous comfortable hotels and holiday homes, complements the area’s varied natural surroundings perfectly. Visitors to Piteå and the surrounding area can choose from a wide range of activities. Fishing and hunting, boating, swimming, horseback riding, golf, hiking and cycling in summer, and cross-country skiing, skating, dog sledding and snowmobiling in winter are just some of the many options on offer. Unique experiences include paddling beneath the northern lights or in the light of a full moon, going on an icebreaker safari, or riding through Sweden’s wilderness.
Piteå is a particularly family-friendly holiday destination. In summer, the beach at Pite havsbad, Piteå’s seaside resort, invites the whole family to swim and enjoy its sandy shore. Piteå offers memorable experiences for the whole family in both summer and winter. Fart och Fläkt is a leisure centre with a go-kart track, quad-bike rentals, paintball, a Robinson course and ice racing. Many hotels in and around Piteå offer spa and wellness facilities, and a glassworks showcases this traditional craft. Piteå is an ideal destination for group trips or conferences, where work and holiday can be combined.
The Piteå archipelago is a destination in its own right. As in almost every part of Sweden’s Baltic coast, all kinds of active holidays can be enjoyed here with the whole family. Unique natural phenomena create a relaxing atmosphere. A holiday in Piteå combines close contact with nature, well-developed tourist infrastructure, comfortable accommodation and a town atmosphere in a compact area on Sweden’s Baltic coast—and at any time of year.
