Køge

Køge is a popular choice for a holiday on the Baltic Sea, on the Danish island of Zealand. In the heart of the city, Køge surprises visitors with its extraordinary romantic charm. Romantic travellers and anyone looking for a cosy weekend getaway will appreciate the area around Køge.

The forests, countryside and collection of royal castles around Køge offer plenty of opportunities for excursions by bike or on foot. To the east, Køge Bay opens the way to the Baltic Sea. Few Baltic holidaymakers will notice the difference. The beaches of Køge Bugt are picturesquely white, and the water is shallow—ideal for a holiday on the Danish Baltic coast. With the city of Køge’s welcoming atmosphere as a backdrop, families, too, come here to book an apartment, holiday home or, if they prefer, a hotel close to the Baltic Sea.

In the centre of Køge, where cobbled lanes meet elegant half-timbered houses, and cosy pubs and inviting cafés promise a relaxed evening out, the city’s history reveals some troubling events. Køge witnessed witch trials, and saw naval battles force empires either to victory or surrender; yet the city also enjoyed special privileges and exemption from taxes. A guided tour brings these stories to life in fascinating detail, taking visitors to what may be Denmark’s oldest house and revealing how the kings’ mistresses were lavishly rewarded with Vallø Castle.
