Slagelse

Halfway between the towns of Kalundborg in the north and Næstved in the south of the Danish Baltic Sea island of Zealand lies the town of Slagelse, just a few kilometres from the Baltic coast of the Great Belt. It is the largest town in southwestern Zealand and, as such, a shopping centre for the holiday region around Slagelse and Korsør. Slagelse’s history is closely linked to the nearby ruins of Trelleborg, not to be confused with the castle in the Swedish town of the same name, Trelleborg. The former Viking fortress was built in the late 10th century, housed around 1,000 inhabitants and was excavated in the 1940s. Parts of it can be visited today, and it serves as a Viking experience centre. It is Denmark’s best-preserved Viking ring fortress.

Slagelse is known for its rich cultural life. Every Wednesday at 1 p.m., mounted guards ride through town in historical uniforms; the Red Tower in the centre houses more than 50 sculptures and hosts changing art exhibitions; and numerous artists live in the town. The Baltic beaches north and south of Korsør are not far from Slagelse. Korsør, like the small harbour town of Skælskør southwest of Slagelse, is part of Slagelse Municipality. The southwest coast of Zealand is a popular destination for families seeking an active holiday. Visitors generally stay in one of the area’s many typically Danish holiday homes or at a campsite. A recommended day trip from this region is to the Danish capital, Copenhagen, just about an hour’s drive away.

This makes the western part of the Danish Baltic Sea island of Zealand a highly varied holiday destination. You can go hiking or cycling through nature, explore Danish history, enjoy a relaxing beach holiday or take part in water sports along the Baltic coast. The southwest coast of Zealand, with the small offshore islands of Agersø and Omø, has several leisure harbours that are popular stopping points for sailing and motor yachts.
