Gdynia (Gdingen)
The city of Gdynia (Gdingen) lies on the western shore of the Bay of Gdańsk (Zatoka Gdańska), about 20 kilometers north of Gdańsk. Gdynia only acquired its present-day importance as a major center for maritime and port industries after the end of the First World War, when the region became part of Poland as the so-called “Polish Corridor.”

The cityscape today is a blend of medieval and late Gothic brick buildings and modern urban architecture. A good starting point for exploring the city is the harbor’s South Pier. Passing the three museum ships, including the Dar Pomorze, visitors can admire the still-active and imposing sailing training ship Dar Młodzieży, as well as enjoy beautiful views of the city, the harbor, and the coastline stretching south, with its cliffs and beach.
Gdynia is an ideal vacation destination, especially for those interested in history and culture. Active travelers will also find plenty to enjoy here. The entire region, with the seaside resort of Sopot to the south and the Hel Peninsula to the north, invites families to enjoy a varied vacation.
