Saltsjöbaden near Stockholm

In the heart of the Stockholm archipelago, on Baggensfjärden Bay, the town of Saltsjöbaden (Salt Sea Bath) was founded at the beginning of the 20th century. The project was developed by Sweden’s most prominent industrial family, the Wallenbergs. At the same time, a railway line was built from Stockholm , the Saltsjöbanan. From the outset, Saltsjöbaden was planned as a seaside resort for the upper and affluent middle classes, and it retains that character to this day. Alongside the dominant Grand Hotel, numerous other upscale hotels and restaurants were established. Prestigious villas followed, serving as residences for Stockholm’s upper class. Saltsjöbaden is the epitome of a glamorous seaside resort on the outskirts of Stockholm.
Saltsjöbaden became well known for various meetings and events. In 1938, an influential agreement named after the town was concluded here between the Swedish trade unions and the employers’ association, with the aim of ensuring long-term industrial peace. In 1948 and 1952, high-level qualifying tournaments to determine the world chess champion were held here. Finally, Saltsjöbaden hosted the notorious secret Bilderberg Conferences three times—in 1962, 1973 and 1984.
Today, Saltsjöbaden is an easily accessible destination for day trips and recreation in the archipelago, with a historic setting and a range of leisure activities. Notable buildings besides the Grand Hotel include the Grünewald Villa, the observatory built in the late 1920s, the Revelation Church with reliefs by the renowned Swedish artist Carl Milles, and Villa Baggås, which now houses a Buddhist center. Saltsjöbaden thus reflects a part of Sweden’s recent history.
The Saltsjöbanan connects central Stockholm with Saltsjöbaden at frequent intervals. It is now part of Stockholm’s public transport network and is set to undergo substantial expansion and modernization in the coming years.
