Kiekut – Of People and Ships
There is hardly a kilometer of German coastline that Peer Schmidt-Walther has not seen from a ship, explored on foot in a harbor, or discovered in his sea kayak, “Pero.” That is no exaggeration, as his latest book proves. He can see a small but important stretch from the window of his home overlooking Stralsund harbor—when he happens to be at home, that is.
Born in 1944 on the Vistula Lagoon in East Prussia, raised in Eckernförde, and living in Stralsund for nearly 30 years, the energetic author has traveled the world, mostly aboard ships of all kinds and sizes, but also as a truck driver in Australia.
His latest book focuses largely on Germany’s Baltic and North Sea coasts. Drawing on his own experiences aboard ships, he offers not only a vivid and affectionate portrait of the region and its people, but also shares information on many aspects of seafaring, its laws and customs. Readers can get a sense of a pilot’s duties, learn about the often barely visible shipping links crisscrossing the Baltic Sea, and discover the economic concerns of inland waterway crews.
