Hanseatic City of Stralsund
Stralsund lies on the Strelasund, a strait between mainland Western Pomerania and the island of Rügen. It is connected to the island of Rügen by two bridges, including a high bridge with a clearance of more than 40 metres.
Stralsund is one of the most historic cities on Germany’s Baltic coast and was an important member of the Hanseatic League. The city centre is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many secular and religious buildings in the city centre are part of the European Route of Brick Gothic, including the Town Hall on the Alter Markt and the neighbouring St. Nicholas’ Church.
The German Oceanographic Museum and the Ozeaneum together form a unique maritime information centre.
The Hanseatic city of Stralsund is a very popular destination, especially for visitors from Scandinavia. During the period when it belonged to Swedish Pomerania, the city was the seat of the Swedish administration for a long time, and many traces of that era remain. Maritime heritage from past and present comes together between the harbour island and the Volkswerft shipyard: four marinas, an industrial harbour and one of Germany’s largest shipyards.
With the HanseDom, Stralsund is home to one of the largest and finest leisure swimming complexes in Germany. The Stralsund-Rügen Card offers visitors numerous benefits and conveniences.
