Rostock Art in Books

Germany’s second-largest city on the Baltic Sea (after Kiel) has been home to much art and many artists, and at least as many have explored Rostock through their art. Rostock physician Hartmut Gill has already written several books on art, including books about Bauhaus artist Wilhelm Löber, Wilhelm Busch and his relationship with medicine, the draftsman and graphic artist Jochen Bertholdt, and Rostock.
While his first book on Rostock took readers on a photographic tour of the city and its history, Hartmut Gill now focuses on paintings and drawings featuring his hometown. It is important to him to include numerous works that have rarely been seen before.
Many of the artists featured are well known—from Arthur Eulert and Fritz Koch-Gotha to Egon Tschirch, from Thuro Balzer to Mechthild, Anna and Lothar Mannewitz, and from Karlheinz Kuhn, Rudolf Austen and Johannes Müller to Feliks Büttner. But lesser-known artists such as Konrad Knebel, Adolf Jöhnssen, Marie Hager and Burkhard Fäcks also captured the often-beautiful face of the Hanseatic city, marked as it was by upheaval. Their very different perspectives offer fresh insights, even when the images may seem familiar at first glance.
