Archaeological Sites and History

Årsjögård in Årsunda is a living open-air archaeological museum. A one-hour guided tour around Årsjögård includes the longhouse’s great hall, the farm’s runestones and the ironworking site. The one-hour duration is a practical block of time to factor into your day’s plans.

In the centre of Årsunda is Sörbygravfältet, with at least 90 graves dating from the Late Iron Age. It is the largest burial ground in Gästrikland. The one-hour guided tour around the site covers burial customs, excavations carried out there, beliefs, everyday life and the important ironworking industry. While the Årsjögård tour includes the great hall, runestones and an ironworking site, the Sörbygravfältet tour focuses more on burials, everyday life and beliefs. Both tours last one hour; their main difference is their subject matter. Check the current booking information in advance, as details may change.

Årsunda gravfält burial ground is located on Årsundaåsen, along the road that runs through Årsunda. The church in Årsunda also offers a historical point of reference: it bears traces of and has a history dating back to the 13th century, while its present form dates from around the 1450s. These details provide two distinct points of reference in time, without equating the present form with the older traces.

Nature, Trails and Seasonal Experiences

The Årsunda Natura 2000 site encompasses species-rich grasslands with dry meadow vegetation and a long history of ongoing management. In summer 2026, Årsjögård’s visitor programme offered a seasonal cultural highlight: during two weeks of visitor opening hours, the programme included storytelling, fire-making demonstrations, games and combat, and demonstrations of Viking clothing, fabrics and jewellery.

Alongside the one-hour guided tours, there is a longer walk to factor into your plans: the Sjöslingan is about 3.5 kilometres long and takes approximately one and a half hours if you stop at every point. You can start at Årsunda hembygdsgård. The stated duration therefore applies to the route with stops at every point.

Årsunda Strandbad has a two-kilometre-long sandy beach with shallow water, suitable for families. Beach conditions may vary by season. The beach offers a different reason to visit from the archaeological sites and the Sjöslingan: the focus here is on the beach and shallow water.

In winter, there is a 15-kilometre route for cross-country skating on Lake Storsjön. It starts at Strandbaden in Årsunda. As a seasonal winter activity, the route depends on weather and ice conditions. Årsunda therefore offers very different experiences side by side: archaeological tours, a route with an approximate duration, the beach and an activity dependent on winter weather.
