Österfärnebo brings together nature and culture, which can be given different emphasis when planning a trip. Historic sites sit alongside experiences of water and landscape. If you are looking for accommodation, you can first consider whether nature, activities on the water, or architectural and local history will be the focus of your trip.

Landscape and Water

The landscape of Österfärnebo is shaped by the interplay between the pine forests on the eskers and the waters of the Dalälven River. In Färnebofjärden National Park, you can explore the park in your own boat or one rented from a park partner. Edsviken is a swimming area on the Dalälven River, near Färnebofjärden Camping. These offer different ways to enjoy the water: exploring the national park by boat or spending time at a swimming area. For your trip planning, this makes a practical difference between exploring nature and enjoying a swimming getaway.

Historic Sites

Koversta Gammelby has a well-preserved, authentic collection of buildings dating from the 18th century. Here, the historic village setting takes center stage. Hamre gravfält adds a burial ground to this focus, in a striking location: Färnebofjärden lies on one side, and Hamrefjärden on the other. It is considered Gästrikland’s largest burial ground and contains around 200 graves; seven are visible today. The figures distinguish the size of the burial ground from the portion that is visible today. On a visit, you can therefore choose between the village setting of Koversta Gammelby and the location and visible extent of Hamre gravfält as distinct aspects of cultural history.

Church and Landscape

The present, larger Österfärnebo kyrka was built between 1819 and 1822 in the neoclassical style typical of the period, replacing the older church. Its symmetrical form is evident in the arrangement of the building’s parts: the tower is at the west end, while the chancel and sacristy are at the east. The historic sites can also be compared by period: Koversta Gammelby preserves buildings from the 18th century, while the church was built between 1819 and 1822. Svär-Gustavs bon, a shieling at Fängsjön, offers another connection to the landscape. From there, the church is visible on the opposite side of the lake. This places the church in context through its architectural history, symmetrical form and this sightline across the landscape.
