Farmstead, art and architectural history
Gammelgården is an 18th-century farmstead with four wings. As a traditional, fully enclosed farmstead in southern Halland, it is considered a good example of its architectural form. The residential building, with its open roof structure, is in the South Götaland style. The layout of the farmstead and the regionally influenced style of the residential building are two distinct aspects. Gammelgården offers insights into the life and culture of earlier times. In the area, the farmstead is also a central venue for recurring celebrations, as well as activities and guided tours for school classes and other groups.
Since its founding in 1994, Konsthallen Hishult has aimed to show outstanding modern art from the Nordic countries, particularly Sweden. It presents six major exhibitions a year. The art gallery is surrounded by a sculpture park, a Zen garden, Grafikrummet and Boklådan. The historic architectural styles and the focus on modern Nordic art thus represent distinct cultural highlights.
Church and traces of history
Hishult’s present-day church was built in 1901–1902 in the Art Nouveau style; it is currently closed. The church’s heritage includes a Renaissance baptismal font made of heartwood, considered one of the finest of its kind in Halland. Another historical discovery relates to the church site: archaeological investigations in the spring and summer of 1999 uncovered the remains of a so-called bell-casting pit immediately outside the church wall, east of the church.
Near Hishult, the remains of the Sjöboholm manor lie on a headland in Lake Oxhultasjön; its roots date back to the Middle Ages. In the 15th century and for most of the 16th century, Sjöboholm was the principal seat of Itzholte län. The historical arc therefore stretches from medieval roots through 18th-century Gammelgården to the present-day church, dating from the early 20th century.
Marked trails and landscapes
Three marked hiking loops lead from Gammelgården through beautiful landscapes and forests and over bridges. The yellow-marked Hishultsslingan trail passes through marshes and wetlands near Gammelgården. Hishults Byalag is responsible for this loop. The landscapes described offer different points of reference for planning a hike: forests and bridges on the three hiking loops, and wetlands on Hishultsslingan. In this way, trails through the landscape complement the area’s cultural themes with a perspective on nature.
