Laholm’s history is reflected in its preserved medieval structures, dated buildings and the remains of Lagaholm Castle. At the same time, the art of drawing and public art shape the city’s cultural perspective. Along the Lagan River, walks, fishing and a summer boat trip add to the historical and cultural highlights. When choosing a destination, you can weigh up whether town history, culture or time by the water matters most for your stay.

Town History Through the Ages

Lagaholm Castle was built in the 13th century and destroyed in the 17th century on the orders of Charles XI. The ruins lie by the Lagan power station, where the old road to Halmstad crosses the river. The remains of the buildings were uncovered and restored in the 1930s; you can walk among them. This makes it easy to follow the timeline from the medieval castle to the later uncovering of its remains.

Medieval structures have also been preserved in Laholm’s Gamleby: the street network and irregular town plan. Gamleby is also home to St. Clemens Church, built in 1225; its tower dates from 1632. The tower thus marks a later period than the church building. Here, the preserved structure of a neighbourhood and the specific dates of a building complement one another in the story of Laholm.

The Art of Drawing, Theatre and Public Art

The Teckningsmuseet at Hästtorget in central Laholm is the only museum in the Nordic countries dedicated to the art of drawing. It is close to parking and accessible at ground level without stairs. Laholms teater, built in the Art Nouveau style in 1913, is also located at Hästtorget. The two venues offer different focuses: the museum is dedicated to an art form, while the theatre combines historic architecture with a changing programme of performances.

Laholms teater hosts children’s performances, comedy shows, string concerts and rock ’n’ roll, among other events; the programme may change. If you would like to plan a performance into your stay, check the latest dates. Public art is also part of Laholm’s cityscape: John Lundqvist created the Lagafontänen fountains in Laholm’s Stortorget in 1933. Laholm’s public art collection now comprises more than 40 works; its size may change.
