River landscapes along the Krokån

Prästaskogen Nature Reserve lies immediately north of Knäred along the Krokån. Here, the river forms a series of rapids and waterfalls, including Kvarnfallen. Swimming is possible in the rapids. So anyone interested in the river can enjoy both a nature experience and a chance to swim here. Take care around the water.

Kvarnfallet is a scenic spot on the Krokån; the more than 400-year-old parish mill is located there near Knäred. The mill combines great age with a specific location by the river, giving it a distinct historical significance within the nature theme.

Hiking trails of varying lengths

Six marked hiking trails in Knäred start at Knäreds Fritidscenter and are maintained by Knäreds IK. A section of the Hallandsleden also runs through the area around Knäred: it is about 33 kilometres long and leads from Mästocka in the north to Eketsbygget in the south. The section of the Hallandsleden within the area of the historic Knäred parish is listed as just over 30 kilometres.

The two figures refer to different geographical scales: the roughly 33 kilometres describes a section with two endpoints, while the just over 30 kilometres refers to the route within the area of the historic parish. This makes the route length and the area covered easy to distinguish. There is also a 1.5-kilometre hiking loop along the Krokån, which is partially adapted for accessibility. At 1.5 kilometres, it is considerably shorter than the Hallandsleden section of about 33 kilometres.

Rural cultural landscape and power station

The Bollaltebygget cultural reserve in Knäred preserves a rural farm setting, with buildings and a cultural landscape dating from the 19th century. Bollaltebyggetsgården was designated a listed building in 1980; in 2009, it became Halland’s third cultural reserve. The reserve includes the buildings, the surrounding woodland and the adjacent heathland. Its historical significance therefore extends beyond the farm buildings to include parts of the surrounding cultural landscape.

Knäred’s upper power station offers a different perspective on local history. Built in a castle style, the industrial building has an exterior that has remained largely unchanged. It was commissioned in 1910 and inaugurated by King Gustav V in front of more than 400 invited guests. The power station generates about 35 GWh per year. Its architecture, inauguration and annual output show different aspects of the same building: its design, history and power generation.
