Eixen

Village Church and Historic Features

Eixen’s village church is a distinctive cultural attraction. The fieldstone building dates from the mid-13th century and has brick gables and brick window surrounds. Parts of the painted decoration also date from the 13th century and were uncovered again during restoration. For culturally minded travelers, the church offers another area of interest alongside the lake and nature.

The furnishings include a winged altarpiece, probably carved in Lübeck around 1530. Its front features figures of saints, the Coronation of the Virgin, and Saint George; the reverse has panel paintings. Its varied depictions and design as a winged altarpiece make it a distinct part of the church’s history.

The pulpit also has its own historical context: it was made in 1744 in the workshop of Stralsund woodcarver Michel Müller. Along with the medieval church building, its painted decoration, and the altar dating from around 1530, it shows that the village church’s furnishings come from different periods. Visitors interested in architectural history and religious art will therefore find several distinct historical features in Eixen.

An Annual Festival in August
