Brick Church and Church Art

The brick church in Groß Mohrdorf was built in the second half of the 13th century. The altar and pulpit were made around 1700 by Stralsund sculptor Johannes Wendt. The organ was built by organ maker Friedrich Albert Mehmel in 1870; the Baroque baptismal angel was made by Stralsund sculptor Elias Keßler in 1724. Together, they trace a span from medieval church architecture through Baroque furnishings to a 19th-century organ.

Three Neo-Gothic mausoleums stand in the church cemetery. Neo-Gothic refers to a later revival of Gothic forms, adding a distinctive architectural accent. The Preetz Chapel is also located in the same cemetery. Its furnishings include a large marble angel inspired by classical antiquity and blue stained-glass windows with floral motifs. Cycling the “Crane, Art & Coast” Route

The “Crane, Art & Coast” bike tour is 38 kilometers long and takes about seven hours of riding time. Time for sightseeing is additional. From Prohn, the route passes through Klein Damitz, Klausdorf, Barhöft, Hohendorf, Groß Mohrdorf, Bisdorf, Kinnbackenhagen, Nisdorf, Neuen- and Altenpleen, and Sommerfeld before returning to Prohn. If you plan to stop along the way, allow extra time in addition to the stated riding time.

The route follows flat to gently rolling roads, with varying surfaces. The distance, approximate riding time, and changes in surface offer different clues for planning your day: the mileage alone does not indicate how much time remains for stops, and the route does not follow the same surface throughout. The tour’s name brings together cranes, art, and the coast; its specific route makes Groß Mohrdorf one section of the circuit.

Nature and the Seasons in the Municipality

The villages in the municipality of Groß Mohrdorf lie on the edge of the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park. A developed cycle path runs along the coastline through the municipality, passing viewing platforms and an observation hut. In autumn, migratory birds rest around the castle from September through the end of October. At times, up to 70,000 birds can be seen in the shallow lagoons of the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park. These seasonal details offer a different kind of guidance from the fixed distance and approximate duration of the cycling tour.

Hohendorf Castle in the Municipality of Groß Mohrdorf

Hohendorf Castle belongs to the municipality of Groß Mohrdorf but is not in the village of Groß Mohrdorf. It was built in 1854 for the von Klot-Trautvetter family to designs by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, in the Tudor Revival style. The three-hectare park is landscaped with mature oaks and beeches; its designs were created by Peter Joseph Lenné. The architecture and park offer a different focus for an outing in the municipality than the brick church in the village.
