Walk and Village Character
A short walk starts at the two village ponds and follows Nepziner Weg and Kirschenweg toward the forest. Along the way, it passes the “Nepziner Weg” residential development and reaches the west side of the palace park. The stops form a clear sequence from the village pond, along paths and through the residential area, to the edge of the park. Those interested in village character can experience water, residential buildings, and green space as different aspects of Karlsburg.
The historic center of Karlsburg includes typical single-storey houses, almost all of which have now been modernized. This offers a different historical perspective from the palace’s grand architecture: here, the scale of the homes and their present-day condition take center stage; there, the building history and park design.
History of the Village, Palace, and Park
An entry from 1300 in the oldest Greifswald town book mentions a Johannes from Gnatzkow (“Jo de gnazkow”). The place, later renamed Karlsburg, is therefore considered to have been mentioned for the first time then. Little is known about its early history. This date thus marks an early mention, not a detailed account of the village’s history from that period.
The grand Baroque Palace of Karlsburg was built in 1773 and remained in private ownership until 1945. After 1945, it was used as a home for people with diabetes and as a laboratory building. Its construction, ownership status, and later use are distinct chapters in the palace’s history.
The palace park offers another historical perspective. The marble sculpture of the goddess Flora, dating from the 18th century, is located in the park; the grounds themselves were designed in the 19th century in the style of English landscape gardens. The artwork and garden concept can therefore be distinguished by period: the sculpture dates from the earlier century, the park design from the following one. Together, they form a two-part cultural history alongside the palace’s construction and use.
Vorpommern-Greifswald in a Broader Context
The wider travel destination of Vorpommern-Greifswald offers additional opportunities to enjoy nature and culture. The Ueckermünder Heide is ideal for hiking, cycling, and horseback riding. The Baltic Sea Coast Cycle Route, part of the EuroVelo EV10 route, passes through the district. The Stettiner Haff circular route and the Route of North German Romanticism are also regional cycling routes for exploring Vorpommern-Greifswald. The walk focuses on Karlsburg itself; the heathland and cycling routes appeal to those interested in nature and outdoor activities across the wider destination. Culture enthusiasts will find other distinct themes there: the Pomeranian State Museum in Greifswald displays the Croy Tapestry from 1554, a cultural-historical artifact from the Reformation era. In Anklam, the Otto Lilienthal Museum is dedicated to aviation pioneer, mechanical engineer, and humanist Otto Lilienthal. These destinations broaden the range of themes to include museum collections and the history of technology, while Karlsburg’s palace and village center offer their own historical focus.
