Christ Church and the medieval Castrum Turglowe
Christ Church was consecrated on April 3, 1884, and is considered the town’s visual landmark. It provides a distinct historical point of reference alongside the medieval themes explored by the Castrum Turglowe open-air museum. The museum illustrates High Medieval ways of life around the medieval castle ruins in the center of Torgelow.
Castrum Turglowe also includes a multimedia exhibition in the Villa von Torgelow, at Friedrichstraße 1. It opened in 2013 and focuses on Otto IV, Margrave of Brandenburg. Dioramas depict the life of a nobleman in the 13th century. The historical theme therefore focuses both on High Medieval ways of life and on the depiction of a nobleman’s life.
Castrum Turglowe’s annual major events include, among others, events at Pentecost and the castle festival in August. The program features mounted jousting tournaments, scenes performed on the tournament field and craft demonstrations. It also includes the sale of clay jugs and wicker goods. These festival themes complement a museum visit with demonstrations and crafts.
Traces of the ironworks
Near the destination is the Hüttenwerkplatz, the former central square of the ironworks. Historic buildings there include the Faktorhaus and the bell tower. The blast furnace is also part of the site’s history: built in 1756, it was the first of its kind in Pomerania.
The two bells in the bell tower at the HĂĽttenwerkplatz were cast from bog iron ore at the Torgelow ironworks in 1811. The blast furnace and bells point to different aspects of local industrial history. Forest and water as additional travel interests
Torgelow lies in the UeckermĂĽnder Heide and is surrounded by dense mixed forest. If you are interested in the landscape, there is the Torgelow circular hiking trail. It is marked with a green horizontal stripe on a white background. Use this marking to find your way along the trail.
Water offers another activity: at Ukranenland, visitors can take a boat trip aboard the first reconstructed Slavic boat in Germany. Visitors have to row themselves, making the trip an interactive experience that differs from a visit where history is encountered mainly in an exhibition or at historic buildings.
A small boat trailer is available at the waterway rest area in Torgelow. It can be used to transport boats to the floating pontoon at the end of the old Uecker river channel. If you are choosing activities based on your interests, this is a different way to enjoy the water than the boat trip at Ukranenland: here, the focus is on transporting boats to the floating pontoon, while there, it is on sailing in the reconstructed Slavic boat.
