Steinhagen is a municipality in the Vorpommern-Rügen district of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany. It is located approximately 10 kilometers southwest of Stralsund and approximately 10 kilometers north of Grimmen.
Geographical Location
Mönchstein is located in the immediate vicinity of Steinhagen. The surrounding area is home to Stralsund Zoo, Grimmen Zoo, RuheForst Rügen/Abtshagen, Dänholm, and Klosterberg. Burgwall and Schlossberg are located in the wider regional surroundings of Steinhagen.
Landscape
Steinhagen has a wooded rural setting; Borgwallsee lies to the north, while Krummenhagener See, a wetland and body of water, lies to the east.
History
Around 1300, Steinhagen was already a parish village with an estate. With the completion of its church, the local parish gained ecclesiastical independence. The historical management of water in Steinhagen included damming streams and rivers to operate watermills.
