Railway Station History and Townscape

Teckomatorp’s railway station was built in 1872. The Railway Hotel dates from 1886, and the old primary school was built in 1894. Land was acquired for Folkets hus in 1905; the building itself was constructed in 1906. This timeline makes the town’s history tangible through specific buildings spanning several decades. Teckomatorp illustrates the railway settlements in Skåne that developed into new rural centres. The development of the railway town thus sits alongside the construction dates of individual buildings. The grid-based town plan describes the structure of the town as a whole. Yellow and red brick are the predominant building materials in the historic buildings. These features show different scales: the layout of the town and the materials used in its buildings. Folkets hus is a good example of a meeting hall belonging to the popular movement; it adds a social perspective to the local architectural history timeline. The grid plan shows a regular street pattern.

Art and Culture in Teckomatorp

At the railway station, you can view the murals on both sides of the station building. They are site-specific public artworks inspired by the station surroundings. The historic station also houses Tapper-Popermajer Gallery. The physical gallery is open by appointment, so arrange your visit in advance. The BT-Kemi Project exhibition is located at Torgskolan, Skolgatan 1B, in Teckomatorp.

Vallarna as a Walking Area

If you would like your stay to include more than architectural history, Vallarna offers a second focus: a landscaped walking area with hills and a pond. Unlike the historic buildings and artworks, the landscape takes centre stage here. This lets you include culture and a walk as distinct interests in your travel plans.
