Lidzbark Between Lake, Wel River and Urban History

If you are considering Lidzbark as a place to stay, three themes stand side by side: Jezioro Lidzbarskie and the Wel River, the circular routes and the Weltrack, as well as historic buildings and traces in the streets. The waterscape gives the town a connection to nature; the routes differ in length, course and trail type. The castle tower, St. Adalbert’s Church and Stare Miasto Street also offer different connections to the past. Lake and River in Lidzbark

The Wel flows through Jezioro Lidzbarskie. The lake has sandy beaches and coves used for swimming and fishing; local conditions may vary. Circular Routes and Weltrack

The municipal route descriptions from 2015 list two circular routes. The blue circular route around Jezioro Lidzbarskie is about 7.7 km long, follows the lakeshore and starts at Małe Jeziorko in the sports and recreation park on Garbuzy Street in Lidzbark. The yellow circular route to “Kurojad” is about 15 km long, starts and ends in Lidzbark, and passes through the Wel Valley, where the river has the character of a mountain stream. At approximately 15 km, the yellow route is almost twice as long as the roughly 7.7 km blue loop; the landscapes also differ, with a valley on one route and lakeshore on the other. Check the condition of both trails locally before planning your trip.

The Weltrack is a different type of route: an 8,480 m-long, winding and undulating one-way singletrack. Its technical sections include bends, berms, rollers, rocks and roots. Its one-way layout sets it apart from the two circular routes, while its character is shaped by these technical features. Check the trail’s current condition before setting out, too.

Historical Traces

Lidzbark’s architectural and street history also offers specific points of interest. The Gothic castle tower, dating from the 14th century, was repurposed as the town and municipal library. St. Adalbert’s Church (Kościół pw. Św. Wojciecha) dates from 1752. Stare Miasto Street is dated to the years 1320–1331. These three places represent distinct historical features: a repurposed tower, a church and a street with its own date range. The town’s history thus adds another perspective on Lidzbark alongside its natural features and routes.
