Dobki on Lake Dobskie

Dobki lies on the southern shore of Lake Dobskie in the Ełk Lake District (Pojezierze Ełckie), 7 km west of Olecko. The history of Dobki

Dobki came into being during the settlement of the northeastern territories of the Duchy of Prussia. A transaction with specifically named parties is recorded for 1555: the starost Krzysztof Glaubitz sold Maciej Kibisz four schulzenhufen for 180 marks. Kibisz undertook to establish a rent-paying village on 40 hufen under Kulm law. The sale and the undertaking describe different parts of the same transaction; the four schulzenhufen and the 40 hufen are therefore not interchangeable figures. The undertaking to establish the village is also not the same as the village having already been founded in 1555. This sequence is precisely what makes the settlement history illuminating: it connects the specific land sale with the plan to establish a rent-paying village.

The former names also provide a way to explore the history over time. Dobki was formerly called Kibisze and, in German, Dopken; since 1938, the village has borne the name Markgrafswelde. If you encounter older references to the place, these names can help you recognize it as Dobki. They are former names for the same place, not additional destinations. Together with the 1555 settlement transaction, they show how the village’s history can be traced across several periods.

Historical sites and route

Another historical point of interest is a former Evangelical cemetery in Dobki, dating from the 19th century.
