Town History and Regional Culture

The historic townscape includes the market square and the surrounding streets. It dates from the 16th to the 19th century and has been listed in the heritage register since 8 November 1956, under registration number A-181. Anyone interested in Olecko’s development can visit the Olecka Izba Historyczna, which has a permanent exhibition on the town’s history. On display are objects, documents and photographs relating to Olecko or the Olecki District.

The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross also offers insight into the town’s architectural and decorative history. It was built between 1859 and 1861 and has been listed in the heritage register since 15 December 1989, under registration number A-2963. Its furnishings include a wooden Neo-Gothic high altar from the second half of the 19th century, two matching side altars, a Neo-Gothic pulpit and a baptismal font from the same period.

Another historic building is the former Starost’s Office. The current building stands on the site of a castle built in the 17th century and destroyed by fire in 1822. The Regionalna Izba Pamięci is on the second floor. The Olecka Izba Historyczna also holds monthly meetings on the history of the town and region.

The Mazurskie Spotkania z Folklorem folk festival celebrates traditional crafts, music, singing and folk dance. It has been held since 1998 and was held again in Olecko in 2025. The 2025 programme included stalls selling homemade food and culinary workshops on Masurian specialities. The festival also offers a culinary perspective on regional culture.

The Lake, Routes and Outdoor Activities

At Jezioro Olecko Wielkie there is a pier with a diving tower, built around 1930. It forms part of a listed sports, leisure and cultural centre in Olecko. The town park lies between the lake and Gołdapska Street and is a historic site with a sporting and recreational character. The historic diving towers in the park’s bathing area are considered unique beyond the region.

Skocznia Beach on Jezioro Oleckie Wielkie has a pier, a diving tower, a water slide, a beach volleyball court, a WOPR lifeguard station, a bar and a watersports equipment rental. There is also a watersports equipment rental at the beach next to the town pier. If fishing is more your interest, Jezioro Oleckie Wielkie is classified as a Sielawa-type lake and attracts anglers.

For a trip on the water, the lake is the starting point for a scenic kayaking route on the Lega. Another way to explore the landscape is the approximately 7 km Dolina Pluskwianki educational trail. It runs through the scenic valleys of the Pluskwianka River to Jezioro Oleckie Wielkie. Take the stated route length into account when planning your day; it describes the route, not a specific walking time.

The 12 km Wiewiórcza Ścieżka cycling and walking route is equipped with information boards for nature education for children and young people. This lets you choose between cycling and walking based on the route length and your interest in nature topics.

Other Places to Visit

The LEGA-SPA complex includes a dry sauna, a steam sauna, a Roman steam bath, infrared lamps, experience showers, water jets, heated ceramic loungers, a massage room and a relaxation room. For local information, the Tourist Information Centre is located at Plac Wolności 22 in the town centre. It provides printed sightseeing materials and souvenirs, as well as information on attractions, current sports and cultural events, accommodation, food establishments and equipment rentals.
