Pärnu

Location and history

Located on the Gulf of Riga, Pärnu is one of the most important seaside resorts in the Baltic states. Like many other towns in the region, Pärnu was founded in 1251 by the Teutonic Order under its German name, Pernau, and a castle was built there. Its favorable location in a northern inlet of the Gulf of Riga ensures an ice-free harbor. The town soon became a member of the Hanseatic League. Like the rest of Livonia, Pärnu passed from Swedish to Russian rule at the beginning of the 18th century. Regular bathing began as early as 1838.

Pärnu attractions

The former fortress grounds have developed into an attractive green belt near the old town. The Tallinn Gate and the Red Tower have survived as remnants of the old fortifications, bearing witness to the town’s former defenses. Numerous craftspeople have set up around the Red Tower and, together with the annual Hanseatic Days, create a medieval atmosphere. While St. Elizabeth’s Church is now known for its large concert hall, St. Catherine’s Church is considered one of Estonia’s most beautiful Apostolic Orthodox Baroque churches. Pärnu is considered Estonia’s summer capital, renowned for beach life, dozens of festivals, nightclubs, major parties, concerts, and folk celebrations.
