Nyborg
The town of Nyborg is located on the island of Funen, right on the Great Belt along Denmark’s Baltic Sea coast. Like the Little Belt and the Øresund, this strait connects the Baltic Sea proper with the Kattegat, its northernmost part. At the same time, it separates the two Danish Baltic Sea islands of Funen and Zealand. Until 1998, the two islands were connected by ferries; since then, one of the most impressive bridges has spanned the Great Belt. It is more than 18 kilometres long in total and stands over 70 metres high at its tallest point. The Great Belt Bridge connects Nyborg on Funen with Korsør on the island of Zealand.
Nyborg is one of Denmark’s oldest towns and, thanks to its central and strategically exposed location, has played a decisive role in Danish history. For a short time, it was even the capital. In the mid-17th century, Nyborg was developed into a fortress, which was decommissioned only in 1869. Its remains can still be visited today.
Numerous beaches and campsites line the long, straight east coast of Funen between Svendborg and Nyborg. Comfortable Scandinavian-style holiday homes complete the range of affordable accommodation, which is supplemented by several hotels in the town of Nyborg. Sailing, surfing, golf and cycling are popular ways for the whole family to enjoy an active holiday on the east coast of Funen. There is a golf course right on the Knudshoved peninsula, at the site of the former ferry port. The birdwatching tower at Knudshoved is also the starting point for guided birdwatching walks. Woods in the coastal hinterland also invite visitors to go walking. Denmark’s greatest son from the island of Funen, the poet Hans Christian Andersen, left his mark around Nyborg, too. A legendary spring between two villages west of Nyborg features in one of his works.
As the largest town on the east coast of Funen, Nyborg is the centre of the East Funen holiday region. The town’s intriguing mix of historic and modern buildings invites the many holidaymakers and day visitors to stroll around and shop. Nyborg is a popular and attractive destination for a holiday on Denmark’s Baltic Sea coast, with its many holiday homes and campsites offering affordable accommodation.
