Bad Doberan
The town of Bad Doberan lies a few kilometers from the Baltic coast, between the cities of Rostock and Wismar. In the 12th century, its foundation was due not only to Slavic settlers but, above all, to the construction of a Cistercian monastery. The former monastery church, Doberan Minster, remains the town’s landmark to this day.
With its many institutions of artistic and historical significance and a varied events program, it attracts thousands of visitors every year.
As early as 1822, the Stahlbad spa was established in Doberan, laying the foundations for the spa business that later developed, with its focus shifting to peat baths. The peat needed for this was extracted in the nearby Conventer lowlands. A newly built rehabilitation clinic continues Bad Doberan’s spa tradition. The narrow-gauge railway “Molli” also reflects Bad Doberan’s role in the development of spa culture in the district of Heiligendamm. It runs from Bad Doberan station right through the town to Heiligendamm and on to the Baltic resort of Kühlungsborn .
